I am a PhD student studying at the University of Sydney. Originally from Ireland I have been in Australia for nearly 20 years now, and have almost adjusted! I greatly enjoy teaching and with more than 15 years experience of tutoring years 11 and 12 in the Australian system I have developed a large skill base in both one on one and group tutoring, and have worked with all sorts of kids, with all sorts of challenges in their studies. I am confident that I can bring even the most reluctant student up to a higher level of achievement through care, diligence (on both our parts) and of course lots of hard work, but work that I do my best to make fun and with material that I work hard to make enjoyable.

Rates

I charge $45 an hour for one on one tutoring, with a decrease in rates if the session runs for more than one hour or more than one hour is required within a week. Depending on the amount of students I am working with, I do organise small class type sessions and charge $25 p/h for group or class bookings. These can be especially helpful for kids with difficulties in speaking up in class, or public speaking in general as I am very careful to make them safe environments for the kids. As a result, with no judgement to be inferred, any particularly disruptive student may not be able to join these classes, or if any bullying behaviour is exhibited, they will be asked to leave.

While I prefer to teach in outdoor areas, when approaching exam time I sometimes move to the student's home to help organise a study area and routine, in which case I charge a small fee for travel costs, depending on where it is I have to travel. I also charge slightly more ($50 p/h) for specialised sessions focussing on exam preparation, essay writing and any work that might involve an excessive amount of my own time being used to mark or comment on "committed" or contract sessions, those being the ones in which a student works on one particular piece of work and sticks with it until it is refined. These cases are rare, but sometimes necessary, and other than extreme circumstances of course there is no charge for any marking or correction done by me outside of tutoring hours.

Experience

I have been tutoring English, English Literature, History, Art History and Civics, specialising in final year (year 12) students for more than 15 years. I have learnt that it takes a different approach to every single student to get the best out of them, but am a firm believer in making the work fun, solving problems with kindness and clarity and taking each kid as they come. I have tutored well over 100 high school kids at this point, and no two have been the same. I can be strict, but I take it as my responsibility to work out what will be the best way of dealing with any given problem, and take each kid as they come, and offer them as much genuine help and kindness as I can, particularly in the very stressful final year of high school.

Education

I am currently in the midst of a PhD in English at the University of Sydney. I have two undergraduate degrees: one B.A/B.Sci in Cultural Studies and Educational Psychology from Curtin University, WA, and one B.A English/Philosophy (Hons I) from the USYD. I graduated high school in 1994, and won awards for both English Literature and Art History in my own final year. I have begun (but not completed - deferred by ill health) an MTeach at USYD, which I intend to pursue during my PhD candidature. I have just begun teaching at a Tertiary level, and am unsurprised to find that all the same basic issues arise at any level of teaching and learning, and while I may not have perfected dealing with any potential challenge, I do feel I have a good grasp of most of them.
