From my experience as a tutor at university and high school, I have found that many students are afraid of asking questions in class.

- A staggering 72% of students are too afraid to ask questions in class due to the fear of looking silly in front of their peers.

- 10% of students do not ask questions in class because it may not be urgent enough to ask the teacher

- 18% of students believe the situation or the teacher may have prevented the question from being asked.

Compounding to this problem is the increasing number of students in the classroom, meaning less attention is given to the students. As a result, the build-up of unanswered questions leads to a lack of understanding. This in turn affects the student’s performance and engagement in class.

How can these problems be solved?

Tutoring can be very beneficial because it provides a safe and friendly environment for students to ask questions without the worry of looking silly in front of their peers. Importantly working with a tutor provides personalised attention that may be lacking in the classroom.
